Research areas

Overall area of research 1: Product Design

Product design: The process of imagining, creating, and iterating products that solve users' problems or address specific needs in a given market.

Product design requires deep understanding of three major aspects of a product: aesthetics, ergonomics and functionality. There are various tools and techniques for this.

We believe in evidence based or data driven designs. Thus, most of our research is conducted through design experiments with experienced designers. This we did mostly for understanding the design process, or for analysis a design support tool or for evaluating a methodology.

Overall area of research 2: Sustainability

Sustainability refers to the ability to meet our present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own (Butland report). It encompasses environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and economic viability. By integrating sustainable principles into operations, businesses can enhance resilience, drive innovation, and foster long-term growth.

We conducted extensive research on Eco- design that is design for sustainability. In product design, sustainability plays an important role by helping designers develop new products that are more sustainable (less environmental impact, use less resource, creates less wastes and others).

Many of our research is Life Cycle based, where we physically collected data from the industries and analysed.

Overall area of research 3: Biomimicry

Biomimicry is an interdisciplinary approach to innovation that seeks to solve human challenges by taking inspiration from nature: natural processes, designs, and ecosystems.

Designs that lasted for millions of years most be great design. We should be able to learn from these designs.  In our research, we explore how to learn from nature, how to provide inspiration to the designs to help them come up with new products that are bio inspired, and various other interesting research.

According to various researchers, any biological and artificial (manmade) products can be expressed in the form of function, structure and behaviour. Learn more how we have used this idea in our research.

Overall area of research 4: Additive manufacturing (AM) (started in 2022)

Additive Manufacturing (AM), commonly referred to as 3D printing, is an advanced manufacturing process that builds objects layer by layer from digital models, typically created in CAD software. Additive manufacturing also enhances design flexibility, enabling customizations. Furthermore, AM supports on-demand manufacturing, reducing inventory and transportation costs.

We have found that additive manufacturing can provide designers a lot more freedom to design parts that were previously difficult to manufacture, hence enabling design freedom and enabling creativity in form generation.

A possibility of a nice blend of creativity and sustainability. AM is a an interesting area that could be explored with greater depth.
